About

What is Mojo Pie?

I started Mojo Pie to write reviews of recording gear. I consider it a place where I and my friends write about gear, recording and music.

Who are you?

My name is Steven Langer. I started Mojo Pie in 2002 as I was disappointed in the quality of criticism involving recording gear. The site moved to its current from in December 2008. Prior to moving to this heavily modified version of Blogger the site regularly attracted approximately 10,000 to 15,000 readers per month. Readership at the peak of the site's popularity regularly exceeded 30,000 unique visitors per month.

Why the recent changes to Mojo Pie?

Managing and maintaining a website is time consuming. I found that due to other interests in my life that I neglected the site due to the required commitment of time. I noticed in the 2008 election cycle that Nate Silver put together the best election watching website at fivethirtyeight.com. I saw what he did within Google's Blogger and thought it an elegant solution to a publication dominated by one personality. I like to write. I do not like to code and edit web pages. I scrapped a redesign that I'd been working on and I took the hint from fivethirtyeight.com and decided to update Mojo Pie to Blogger.

Are you qualified to write about music or audio?

I earned a bachelor degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma. I have written for local and national publications about popular music. I attended the jazz studies program at the University of North Texas. I studied with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Eldon Shamblin, who was inducted as a member of Bob Will and His Texas Playboys. My interest in recording stems from the use of a the recording studio in the creation of music. I've maintained my own private studio for a number of years. My main philosophy tends to be "less is more."
